Migrate to MBS – Linux & Mac
A number of times when first trialing CloudBerry; many users download CloudBerry Backup which is a standalone product. However; as they move through they also want to use the central management options and web console that the Managed Backup Service (MBS) provides. What this means however is that the two solutions use different paths to store data in the cloud. This article outlines what’s required to migrate to MBS when running on Linux & Mac operating systems; avoiding data that’s already in the cloud from being copied a second time.

Before you start migrating…
1. Configure your Managed Backup Service Console with cloud storage already configured. A list of storage configuration guides are available in our support area.
2. Have both CloudBerry Backup and CloudBerry Online Backup installed on the machine.

Migrating to MBS through User Interface
When migrating through the user interface; there are three different steps that will need to be completed:
1. Import settings from CloudBerry Backup to CloudBerry Online Backup.
2. Copy backup data into the MBS path on your cloud storage.
3. Re-synchronise the backup repository.
For the example; we’re using a machine named UbuntuVM and AWS S3 storage. However; the steps are the same regardless of storage and OS being used.
Importing settings & configuration from CloudBerry Backup to CloudBerry Online Backup
1. Open CloudBerry Backup.
2. Click on the Main Menu > Export Configuration.
3. On the Export Configuration popup name and choose the path for configuration file and click Save.
3. Once you’ve set the path and file name, click Export to create the config file.
4. Open CloudBerry Online Backup.
5. Click on Main Menu > Import Configuration.
6. Select the configuration file created in step 3 & 4 above, then click Import.
Once the import is complete, all backup and restore plans will be visible within the Online Backup UI. Once this is done;
- Edit the backup plan and select the cloud storage you’re planning to use.
- Run a quick backup to create the MBS folder in the cloud storage – which is needed below.
Copy Backup Data into the MBS path within Cloud Storage
1. Login to your cloud provider console.
2. Browse to the Storage Container where your backups are being written to. You should see two folders in the root of the container (one beginning with CBB & one beginning with MBS):
3. Copy the CBB_<computername> folder (and it’s contents) into the MBS_<guid> folder; as shown in the example below:
Re-synchronise the backup repository
The respository is a database which is stored on the local machine to the backup software; which keeps track of all data and changes in the cloud storage. Since you’ve copied the folder across; the database will need to be updated for the software to recognise the backup data being stored in the MBS folder.
1. Login to your MBS console.
2. Browse to RMM > Remote Management.
3. Find the machine you’re using (in our example it’s UbuntuVM); click the Gear icon > Edit > Edit Options:
4. On the Options screen, open up Repository and click Synchronize Repository:
5. Select the cloud storage to synchronise from the Account drop down. Once selected, click the Synchronize Now button to begin.
Note: The amount of time for synchronisation to complete will vary depending on the amount of data that’s in the cloud storage.
Once it’s all synchronised then that’s it – migrate to MBS is now finished. You should be able to run your backup plan and find that only the changes are transferred instead of the entire backup set.
