Different Cloud Services – Backup, Storage and Sync
There are many different terms being thrown around in reference to cloud computing. The different cloud services used include Cloud Backup, Cloud Storage and Cloud Sync. While they may all sound the same; they’re all very different and a misunderstanding could put vital business data at risk!
What is the Cloud?

In traditional terms; this would be like backing up to a tape, or a portable USB hard drive. However; automatic transfer of backup data offsite is now possible when using the cloud; without the need of someone having to physically take the backup with them for it to be ‘offsite’.

These types of Cloud services are where the physical data is stored when using a cloud backup or cloud syncing service. An example of traditional storage that’s used this way would be a NAS device connected to your network which you store files so they’re separate to your desktop or server.
Typically charged for on a usage basis – down to the nearest Gigabyte (GB); it’s adaptable to any amount of change that occurs. It’s easy to add or reduce the amount of storage required in Cloud Storage services; requiring very little time to adjust.
Microsoft Azure, Amazon S3 are the front runners in the Cloud Storage space.
