Selecting the right backup solution
As they say ‘variety is the spice of life’. Over the last 10 to 15 years, the variety of backup solutions has exploded.
Consequently; all have their variations and offers to be the right backup solution. With this, it’s sometimes like trying to choose which pill to take.
We recently outlined some things to think about when it comes to backup strategy.
While most intentions initially begin with sticking to ‘the plan’ – it’s common to see the plan alter (unintentionally) when it comes to selecting which backup solution to implement.
A few additional things we look for evaluating a backup solution follow below.
Note: we’re not looking at the cost of the backup solution, as we know your data is priceless and no expense will be spared! 🙂
Backup Destination Support
For a solid backup strategy such as the 3-2-1 strategy, it’s regarded as best practice to have multiple backups on different media types.
As a result; the number of different hardware types supported by a backup solution should be considered.
To begin with; basic support for an removable device (USB hard drive, tape), fixed media (NAS) and an offsite option (cloud) should be a minimum.
Being an IT administrator today is tough. Too many moving parts may need regular checking. It’s a worthwhile task making this as seamless as possible.
To begin with, any solid backup solution on today’s market should provide excellent documentation on the outcome of a particular backup run. Things that will make life easier for IT staff include:
– can an e-mail be sent with the backup report attached?
– does the vendor provide a monitoring console which interfaces with the backup solution for real time information?
How fool proof is the recovery process?
Firstly, a common theme on our blog is about the recovery process and how to restore a backup.
Is it difficult to follow and problems arise at every step? Does everything just flow nicely and just works?
Remember that the recovery process will be the difference between being a tech hero or a scape goat.
Chose a backup package that’s easy to follow and reliable on the recovery side of things.
What support is available for the backup solution?
While we never plan on having to contact support for backup and recovery related issues; it’s inevitable that we’ll all have to go down that path at some point.
Is the online help easy to follow so you can self-serve?
Are you able to speak with someone easily?
As a test when evaluating a solution; reach out using a few different methods (e-mail, phone, online chat).
What if the backup solution I’ve selected covers all the above?
Sit back, relax and have that victory cigar!
